As we step further in to creating our own reality and our own tomorrow, we may come across needs versus wants.

Needs – in my mind – are what is necessary for survival of the human self. This can be food, water, shelter, clothes, companionship, love, creativity, etc.

Wants – again, in my mind – is anything that is not needed for survival. Stuff we adorn our walls, shelves, rooms, and self with; the keyword being “stuff”. Excess or extra.

When I was younger I knew I needed the basics for survival. But somewhere along the line, “stuff” got moved over into the needs column. I worked hard towards saving enough to buy the stuff.

Don’t get me wrong. I love paintings, artworks in general and have adorned my walls and shelves with artwork. Bookshelves are lined with books.

As I’ve aged, the stuff became more about having to dust them and take care of them. Next came purging. How can so much stuff accumulate? So, I’ve been purging some of the accumulation of my wants from over my life.

Beyond Stuff

A friend asked what Hubby and I had planned for our July 4th celebration. “We don’t celebrate.”

Why? Why don’t we celebrate the anniversary of the foundation of our independence? The Constitution of the United States?

Because everything has become so commercialized. I don’t think many are celebrating the independence of our country. I don’t think many are remembering our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. The Rights of U.S.A. citizens. The foundation the forefathers built to keep democracy. What would they think of how they are remembered, taught and exercised today?

I don’t feel much like celebrating commercialization, constant attempts to remove or alter our rights, and how so many don’t even know their Constitution or their Bill of Rights.

Instead, July 4th is about fireworks and BBQ’ing. Those are both good, but who is remembering and who is standing up to keep our Rights intact?

Needs Versus Wants

I don’t think our Constitutional rights, and the Bill of Rights, are a “want”. I believe they are a need for the survival of democracy and the United States of America. I believe they are a need for every person in the United States of America.

I may have been working on purging the accumulation of wants from over my life time, but I will tightly hang on to the needs…physically, constitutionally, and spiritually. I continue to stand for our rights – individually, U.S.A. wide and globally. I feel we need to be fair and just with everyone.

What are your wants and needs?
