When you are practicing your abilities, or strengthening your metaphysical abilities, one of the toughest things you work on is getting out of your own way.

By this I mean we are programmed from birth on to listen to others, not ourselves. Metaphysical and/or energy work demands you listen to you. This can create some inner turmoil, and the self-doubt that we were raised with really rears is ugly head.

A part of inner self may say, “You don’t know what you’re doing,” or “It’s just your imagination,” or some other statements to get us to quit trying.

This may be followed with talking oneself out of believing what they are “seeing” (feeling, knowing, intuiting, hearing, etc.) of being real. If there is no mental illness, then please – let it go.

It takes practice to begin to not only listen to yourself – but to trust yourself. And, as a word or two of advice, the more you say or think disparaging words to yourself, the longer it’s going to take to get to the self trust part. This is because our mind and energy take everything literally – it believes everything as truth. “It’s just my imagination,” “I’m making it up”, etc. tells your energy and mind that you’re not to be trusted. This puts you right back into the programming you grew up with. This means you are sabotaging self with self-doubt.

One of the other things to be worked on is the “drama game”. I’m pretty sure either we’ve all played it or have had someone we know who is well versed in it. I don’t like the drama game. For those who were raised with it, energetically speaking, not only are you fighting with self to learn to trust self – and possibly the self sabotaging – but the drama game wants to insert itself into this.

Next up may be panic. “I’m doing something wrong!” or “I’m such a failure with this!” or “I’m going to get left behind!” This panic is based in fear. And what happens when you move into fear? You call more of it to you.

Then, if you share this self-doubt and fear with others while in the drama mode, you are energetically attempting to pull them into the drama game. You’re also spreading your fearful energy when you are energetically spewing onto those you are sharing your fear energy with.

What a nasty vicious cycle.

Now I’m not saying to go all ego. You needn’t get arrogant or become a know-it-all with the information you receive or your techniques.

I recommend you continue to practice, but instead of self-doubt and fear, maybe do this with an air of positive anticipation. “I can’t wait to see or hear the feedback on this! Woohoo!” or “Yay! A new experience!” This helps to start eliminating the drama-game, letting go of the fear, and enjoying the learning experience. And that’s what this is – a learning experience. It’s not a test, you needn’t feel pressured. You are simply learning and experiencing. You’re also learning to start listening and trusting self.

Have fun with your experiences and the journey in learning you.

Note: I initially wrote this for my mentorees and/or students who may feel stuck in practicing, but I realized it may be of use to others as well. This practice can go beyond those learning about their metaphysical abilities – some or all of it can be applied elsewhere, including everyday life.
